Mark Nelson

Banjo on:
Wake Up!
Where Does the Ice Go?

Mark “Pete” Nelson has performed part time since 1981.  His main instrument is the 5-string banjo, both finger picking and clawhammer style.  He has performed with “Jameson Drover,”  the “Rosewood String Band,” the “Fish Heads,” and with his brother Warren at Big Top Chautauqua.  Favorite jams include the “Amazing Grace Café,” and  “Sir Benedict’s”, both in Duluth, MN.

Bill's Notes: I started jamming with Mark and Karen at Big Top Chautauqua in August of 2001 before the Del McCoury show (where I met Becky Schlegel who opened for Del). BTC has a really cool open stage hosted by Dave McCormick. It's in the food tent and is well attended by early arrivers. Marc invited me to join him in singing the bluegrass version of John Prine's Paradise. In September, he appeared with the Blue Tent Orchestra and received strong rounds of applause for his banjo interludes. Now we jam together regularly, mostly at Sir Ben's. Sometimes he asks me to sit in with the Rosewood String Band at the Amazing Grace Bakery. His hospitality is what music is all about.
